The UMass Athletic Development Office was established in Fiscal Year 1991 to provide comprehensive fundraising for the University of Massachusetts intercollegiate athletic program (23 Varsity Teams.) The UMass Athletic Fund was introduced in Fiscal Year 1992 as the official fundraising arm for intercollegiate athletics at UMass, and was renamed the UMass Athletic Association (UMAA) in 2003.

The mission of the UMAA is to encourage the involvement and financial support of alums, parents, and friends to enhance the UMass athletic program. Its objective is to provide the additional resources necessary for the University's student-athletes and coaches to compete successfully - regionally and nationally - thereby allowing them to do their part in bringing honor, national recognition, and high public regard for the University of Massachusetts.

Since the UMAA was founded, it has raised more than $9 million for UMass athletics.
