Happy Friday! Another huge weekend of UMass Athletics is upon us. It all begins tonight at 7 p.m. as the Mass Attack returns to Hockey East action, hosting rival UNH at the Mullins Center. Then on Saturday is the homecoming we've all been waiting for as men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg returns to Springfield at 1 p.m. This JTAM has stories on both hockey and basketball.

The UMass women's basketball team will begin its 2009 Atlantic 10 schedule this Saturday, Jan. 10, as the squad will travel to Fordham for a 1 p.m. tip-off in Rose Hill Gym. An audio broadcast of the contest will be carried on WMUA 91.1 FM, while a video webcast and live stats will be available via UMass All-Access at UMassAthletics.com. Saturday will mark the 29th meeting between the Minutewomen and the Rams. UMass holds a 19-9 edge in the series and has won six of the last eight games the squads have played. Head Coach Marnie Dacko is 6-3 in her career against Fordham; all have been in her tenure with the Minutewomen.

Kellogg was introduced by Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. Kellogg's high school coach at Cathedral, Kevin Kennedy and several local business members spoke about the game and its importance to the City of Springfield. The Mass Attack returns to Hockey East action this weekend with a home-and-home series against No. 13 New Hampshire. The Wildcats will visit the Mullins Center on Friday night (7 PM) before UMass heads to Durham on Saturday night (7 PM). Earlier this season, the teams skated to a 1-1 overtime tie at the Whittemore Center on Oc. 24. This weekend will be the 98th and 99th all-time meetings between the two teams in a series that began in 1926. UMass is coming off a tough 5-2 loss to No. 10 Cornell last Sunday in the Mullins Center. UNH used a four-goal third period to come back against Maine on Sunday in Orono for a 5-4 win.

UMass women's basketball used a 27-5 second half run to carry the squad to a 63-50 victory over NJIT on Wednesday evening in the Mullins Center. The Minutewomen will head into conference play this weekend with a record of 7-8, while the Highlanders fall to 2-10 on the year.

It will be a huge homecoming as UMass coach Derek Kellogg coaches in his hometown for the first time as UMass "hosts" Dayton on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. The Minutemen come into the game with a 5-8 overall record while the Flyers are 14-1, riding a six-game win streak. The game will be broadcast locally on CBS 3 Springfield and on WHIO in Ohio. Mike VanderWoude and Derrick Dukes call the action.
Four UMass football players have been named to the 2008 Sports Network All-America Team as announced on Tuesday. Senior punter Brett Arnold was named to the first team, junior safety Jeromy Miles was a second-team honoree while junior offensive lineman Vladimir Ducasse and senior defensive back/kick returner Courtney Robinson earned honorable mention.
