Bigman Sean Carter Transfers To UMass From Oregon State Head coach Derek Kellogg has announced the addition of forward/center Sean Carter (Fayetteville, N.C.) as a transfer from Oregon State University. Carter, who stands 6-9 and weighs 225 pounds, is enrolled in summer classes at UMass and will sit out the 2008-09 season as a redshirt. The athletic bigman comes to UMass as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining, starting with the 2009-10 season, after playing this past season as a true freshman with the Beavers. The Clippers acquired former UMass star Marcus Camby from the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday for the option to exchange second-round picks with Los Angeles in 2010. Camby led the NBA in blocked shots with 3.61 per game last season, only the second player in league history to do so in three straight seasons. He averaged 9.1 points and 13.1 rebounds playing a career-best 34.9 minutes per game for the Nuggets. Camby was the league's defensive player of the year in 2006-07. (more)
UMass' fourth all-time leading scorer Rashaun Freeman will be playing for the Chicago Bulls Summer League Team as part of the Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando from July 7-11. Freeman will play on a team including No. 1 overall draft pick Derrick Rose. Freeman comes off his first pro season in France where he averaged 19.4 points and 8.0 rebounds for Nantes. (more)
The Atlantic 10 has set the conference game locations for the 2008-09 basketball season. UMass will play home-and-away match-ups with La Salle, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's. The Minutemen will also host Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, Richmond and Temple. UMass' additional road games will be at Charlotte, Fordham, St. Bonaventure, Saint Louis and Xavier. The full schedule complete with dates and times is expected later this summer.
Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-American Gary Forbes will play for the Washington Wizards in the NBA Summer League. The NBA's annual showcase of young talent and free agents will take place July 11-20 in Las Vegas. 21 NBA clubs will field teams this year with all games taking place at the Thomas & Mack Center and COX Pavilion on the campus of UNLV. The Wizards open play on July 14 vs. Portland.
New UMass head coach Derek Kellogg has announced the dates of his new Basketball School held this summer in Amherst. Kellogg and his staff will hold camps from June 23-26, July 21-24 and August 11-14. There will also be a team camp from June 28-29.
