Christina DeRosa, Jason Small, and Karen Upperco Named UMass Winter Scholar-Athletes
Track and field's Christina DeRosa, skiing's Jason Small and diving's Karen Upperco were honored by the UMass Athletic Department as the Winter Scholar-Athletes of the season. All three student-athletes excelled in and out of the classroom this winter and were honored at the weekly sports luncheon in the Campus Center. (more)
 
Mike Kostka and Jason Small Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week

Senior Mike Kostka (Ajax, Ontario) and Senior Jason Small (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) were named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week. This past weekend, both athletes turned in strong performances to help lead their team's to victory. Kostka helped the Mass Attack sweep Merrimack to clinch the eighth spot in the Hockey East Playoffs, while Small led the way for the Minutemen with a second place finish in the slalom with a time of 1:40.17. Men's Skiing Crowned National Champions in Slalom and Giant Slalom

UMass men's ski team celebrates as they took top honors at the 2008 USCSA National Championships in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom events. UMass had four skiers place in the top ten in the Slalom. Senior Jason Small again led the way for the Minutemen with a second place finish at 1:40.17. Andrew Hawes placed fifth with a combined time of 1:44.00 and Matthew Small placing ninth with a time of 1:45.21. Even though his time did not count in the overall score, Ian Hohmeister rounded out the top ten skiers with a time of 1:45.45. It has been 23 years since an Eastern Team has won the USCSA National Championship. (more)

UMass Men's Ski Team Takes National USCSA Giant Slalom Title
Three UMass skiers placed in the top ten as the Minutemen dominated the Giant Slalom at the USCSA Nationals. Senior Jason Small skied to a second place overall finish with a combined time of 2:16.66, Andrew Hawes took eighth place with a total time of 2:19.21, and Ian Hohmeister placed ninth crossing the finish line at 2:19.48. Small's first run in the Giant Slalom earned him the top spot with a time of 1:07.23, winning the race by over a second. The Minutemen as a team also took first place by over a second, out skiing Plymouth State University and Sierra Nevada College.

Jason Small and Eliza Hawkins Triumph At USCSA Regional Over the Weekend
Seniors Jason Small and Eliza Hawkins took first overall at this weekend's U.S. Collegiate Snowsport Association Regional. Hawkins took third in the Slalom on Saturday and second in the Giant Slalom on Sunday to lead all women and help the Minutewomen take second overall as a team. Small placed second in Saturday's Slalom and skied to victory in the Giant Slalom on Sunday. The Minutemen as a team captured first place, beating Plymouth State University by one point.

Men's Ski Team Takes Top Honors At USCSA East Regional
.- Senior Jason Small and sophomore Andrew Hawes dominated the Slalom as the UMass men's ski team took first at the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships. For this particular event, the top three finishers from each team would be counted in the overall points total. Small was the first to score for the Minutemen as he took second place with a combined time of 1:29.25. Hawes was next to score for the Minutemen as he placed fifth with a combined time of 1:32.63. Not to be outdone by his brother, sophomore Matthew Small placed tenth with a time of 1:35.91. With UMass' top three finishers all in the top ten, the Minutemen were able to come out on top with a victory.
