On Friday afternoon, former UMass track and field standouts Jon Korhonen and Andy McCarron completed their cross country charity cycling fundraiser as they rolled across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The pair logged over 3,500 miles as they rode from Boston to San Fran in 35 days raising over $14,000 for the Children's Hunger Fund. The pair will spend some vacation time in San Francisco before returning back to Amherst for a welcome back party on August 16.

California, here they come. UMass cross country/track alums Jon Korhonen and Andy McCarron logged many miles running around Western Massachusetts during their collegiate days in Amherst. Despite being several years out of college competition, cross-country still beckons, but in a different way. They are in the midst of a a real cross-country challenge where they will travel 3,500 miles to San Francisco in 40 days, riding the entire trip on their bicycles to raise money for the Children's Hunger Fund.
Senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the Minutewomen in an eighth-place finish in the women's ECAC Championship race, while sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayettville, N.Y.) headed the men's team and led them to a fifth-place finish in the men's IC4A Championship Race Saturday in the Bronx. Members of the men's team also participated in the Coach's Race on Saturday, another of the three races held in Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday. Kevin Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.) won the Coach's Race placing first overall and finishing the race in 26 minutes and 29 seconds. (more)
The men's and women's cross country teams will head to New York on Saturday to compete in their last race of the 2007 season. Fordham University will host the ECAC women's championship as well as the IC4A men's championship races at local Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Both teams are coming off strong performances towards the end of their seasons and a solid showing at the NCAA Regional Qualifier last weekend.
Christina DeRosa and Jesse Regnier of Massachusetts have been named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year in men's and women's cross country, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's sports information directors. Alongside DeRosa, redshirt junior Shiyi Zan was also named to the academic all-conference team.

The men's cross country team placed 11th while the women's team took 28th at the NCAA Regional Qualifier in Boston Saturday. Senior leader Christina Derosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led the way for the women while freshman Jeff Hill (Blackstone, Mass.) paced the men's team. The men improved greatly on their finish from last year moving up three places.
