         <description><![CDATA[UMass Skiing will begin its pursuit of a second straight USCSA National title this weekend when they travel to Sunapee, N.H. to compete in the Colby-Sawyer College Carnival at Mt. Sunapee. Both the men and the women will compete in the Giant Slalom on Friday before the Slalom event on Saturday. Last year, both squads placed third at the Carnival. The Women will be looking to their captains for solid performances this weekend in Ashley Hawes and Emily Shilletto.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[The UMass Ski teams will be holding their second annual Dinner/Auction Benefit on Saturday, December 13 at 6 PM in the Campus Center Auditorium. UMass Ski Supporters, friends and family are all invited and encouraged to attend. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour followed by dinner at 7 PM, and from 8-9 PM the Ski teams will coordinate the auction. The dinner and auction will help raise funds for the team's trip to the USCSA National Championships in Winter Park, Colo.]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[The Minutewomen bounced back after a disappointing Giant Slalom performance to take third in the Slalom. Senior Eliza Hawkins took fourth with a total time of 1:56.39 to finish out her collegiate career. Sophomore Ashley Hawes was right behind Hawkins placing fifth with a time of 1:56.42. Freshman Jamie Taloumis rounded out the top ten in the Slalom event, crossing the finish line at 1:57.03. The women's ski team as a whole, placed third in the Slalom.          <description><![CDATA[The Giant Slalom poised a challenge for the Minutewomen as they placed ninth out of 19 teams at the USCSA Nationals in the Giant Slalom. Heidi Skinner was the top finisher for the Minutewomen with a time of 2:45.79. Skinner placed fourth in her first run but missed a gate on her second to delay her overall time. Ashley Hawes and Emily Shilletto also placed for the women with times of 2:47.13 and 2:56.55, respectively. Eliza Hawkins and Jamie Taloumis encountered problems in their first runs and were not able to finish them.]]></description>

Hawkins took third in the Slalom on Saturday and second in the Giant Slalom on Sunday to lead all women and help the Minutewomen take second overall as a team. Small placed second in Saturday's Slalom and skied to victory in the Giant Slalom on Sunday.          <description><![CDATA[.- Senior Jason Small and sophomore Andrew Hawes dominated the Slalom as the UMass men's ski team took first at the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships. For this particular event, the top three finishers from each team would be counted in the overall points total. Small was the first to score for the Minutemen as he took second place with a combined time of 1:29.25. Hawes was next to score for the Minutemen as he placed fifth with a combined time of 1:32.63. Not to be outdone by his brother, sophomore Matthew Small placed tenth with a time of 1:35.91. With UMass' top three finishers all in the top ten, the Minutemen were able to come out on top with a victory.]]></description>

With Eliza Hawkins still in pain from injuring her calf muscle at the Colby-Sawyer Carnival, Taloumis took third with a combined time of 2:23.03. Hawkins, despite the pain, skied well placing fifth with a time off 2:23.51. After being out for a year with a torn ACL, Ashley Hawes skied in her first carnival of the 2008 season, placing 28th with a time of 2:29.37. Freshman Abby Nolan rounded out the top four skiers with a time of 2:31.79. Lauren Levey, Emily Zimmerman, and Katie Weissman also had great races for the Minutewomen.
